Welcome to the Christ UMC family! 
When joining a church for the first time there is basic information we need about you and your family. We also would like to know more about how the church can best support your faith journey and how you would would like to support the church.

REQUIREMENTS
There is one requirement to be a member of any United Methodist Church. You need to be baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. That’s it! 

  • If your baptism was in a tradition that doesn’t affirm the Trinity (like Unitarian or LDS), it isn’t recognized as valid in the United Methodist Church or most Christian traditions. In that case, you would need to be baptized.
  • If you haven’t been baptized, you can be at any age. While some see it as a way to dedicate a baby to God, baptism is much more than that—it’s not limited to infants and holds deep meaning at any stage of life.

United Methodists confess that baptism is 3 things:
  1. Initiation into the church
    • Welcome to the world-wide, eternal, ancient community of all those who have followed Christ since the first disciples. 
  2. Incorporation into God’s mighty acts of salvation
    • God has promised salvation through the people of Israel since the beginning—a story that has unfolded over millennia. We have been grafted into God's ongoing work of salvation that began long ago.
  3. New birth, through water and the Spirit
    • How can one be born again? Nicodemus asks Jesus. Our lives are no longer the same once we commit to following Him—we die to our old selves so that we can receive new life.

MEMBERSHIP VOWS
At your baptism you promised (or it was promised on your behalf in the case of infant baptism) “To renounce the spiritual forces of wickedness, reject the evil powers of the world, and repent of your sin; To accept the freedom and power God gives you to resist evil, injustice, and oppression; To confess Jesus Christ as Savior, put your whole trust in his grace, and promise to serve him as your Lord”
  • We understand this to be the common call of all Christians 

In the UMC we ask you to support your local church (Christ UMC) by your:
Prayers
  • Can you pray for the church and for those who have asked for prayer by the church?
Presence
  • Can you show up to worship, opportunities to learn, and building community efforts? 
Gifts
  • Will you pledge to giving a portion of your income as both spiritual practice and support for our mission? If 10% isn’t feasible, will you prayerfully consider an appropriate gift?
Service
  • Will you support the church’s mission by serving both within the church (like on Sunday mornings) and in the community (like with our HomePlate team)?
Witness 
  • Will you tell others about our community and invite them into loving relationship with Jesus?
